Virginia's New Governor Creates History as Virginia's Initial Woman Governor

Over 250 years, Virginia has had seventy-four governors, all of them male. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger shattered this glass ceiling by being elected as the initial woman to hold the office in the commonwealth's history.

Emphasizing Cost-of-Living Concerns and Strategic Criticism

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA operative triumphed with a campaign that focused on cost-of-living issues and deliberately targeted the former president's agenda instead of the person.

Beginnings and Education

Hailing from in the Garden State on August 7, 1979, she relocated to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at thirteen. Her father was an military serviceman who subsequently pursued a career in law enforcement; her mother was a nurse and volunteer.

She enrolled in the Virginia's flagship university, obtaining a degree in French studies. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a substitute teacher before turning to a career in public service.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” Spanberger told attendees at a rally in coastal Virginia recently.

Professional Path

At the Postal Service, she worked cases involving narcotics, child predators and money launderers. She executed search and arrest warrants, frequently being the sole female on the operation squad. She then entered the CIA and specialized in anti-terror efforts, serving undercover and internationally.

Life Change

In 2014, she and her spouse, an engineer, faced a decision. Living on the Pacific coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They pulled out a world map and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “all our loved ones lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger stated at her rally: “And so we opted to shift from a national duty, to local engagement because she was correct. Everyone we love lives in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in her home state, she volunteered with an advocacy organization, which addresses firearm incidents, and founded a youth group. In that period, she resolved to seek office, which others told her was a “impossible task” because the party hadn't had won the seventh district in half a century.

“But I observed what the president was implementing with his executive power and how he was creating conflict. And I noticed my member of Congress over and over again oppose the healthcare law. And I felt I had to do something. So spoiler: I won.”

Centrist Approach

In Washington, she rapidly became part of the centrist group, a alliance of centrist and fiscally moderate lawmakers. She prioritized specific policies: expanding internet access to the countryside, fighting drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She built a reputation for partnering with colleagues across the aisle and was consistently rated as the most cooperative representative of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about messaging that she felt turned off centrists, warning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be used against them in contested districts.

Centrist Group

Along with Congresswomen a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a member of the “pragmatic group” in opposition to the left-leaning “squad” of AOC.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In November 2023, she announced she would leave Congress for a fourth term and would instead run for governor in 2025.

Her platform centred on themes of civic duty, support for schools and infrastructure and defense of governing systems. Her intelligence experience gave her credibility on national security issues and she described public service as a vocation instead of a job.

Win Over Opponent

This helped her to overcome rival candidate her challenger's attacks on social topics, including the assertion that she is an radical on civil rights and transgender healthcare.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that local school districts should decide whether transgender students can participate in competitive sports, portrayed her rival as the candidate more misaligned with the middle of the state's voters.
