The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Overwhelming Fan Response

One could easily to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Has the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
