Preparations for Putin-Trump Talks Delayed Days After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has stated.

This past week Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a meeting was no longer "needed".

The White House declined to provide further information on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports claimed his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar indicating the president had pushed him to relinquish large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Russia.

Yet, on this week the American president endorsed a peace initiative backed by Ukraine and EU officials to freeze the hostilities on the existing battle lines.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against halting the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov stated on this week, suggesting that freezing the front line would simply constitute a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict demanded attention, the Russian diplomat stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of extensive requirements that include the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated discussions about the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the only topic that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of speculation that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he commented.
