Iranian forces say they have struck a American military facility in Bahrain, as the country executed strikes throughout the Middle East in response for a "massive" and ongoing attack against it by the US and Israel.

Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an vicinity in the area of the main base of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain's capital, Manama. The scope of any damage is uncertain and the United States has not commented.

In Israel, air raid sirens sounded across the country after the Israeli military said it had detected an incoming Iranian missile barrage.

The defence ministry of the United Arab Emirates said in a statement that the nation has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"UAE air defence systems engaged the projectiles with notable success and shot down a several projectiles," it added.

It said debris fell on a residential area in Abu Dhabi, causing some structural damage and the death of one civilian.

The United States Air Force operates from Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of the Emirati capital, along with the UAE Air Force.
