Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This new chapter marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.
A Triumphant Return for Fallen Favorites
It has been established that a trio of different characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the exact moment he got the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A character that is now embodied in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back persists. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow still living in a bizarre communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
