Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that depict the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
