Educational institutions in the northern part of Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The criminal group breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, authorities reported.

The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, authorities disclosed.

An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the armed men then led a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.

Security crisis in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in recent months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the conflict.
