Afghan Rulers Employed Left-Behind UK Technology to Track Down Local Nationals Who Worked With Allied Troops, Inquiry Learns

A confidential source has revealed a parliamentary probe that British authorities left behind confidential technology permitting the Taliban to identify Afghans who collaborated with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

The source, known as Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the information breach were instructed to relocate and switch their contact details to protect themselves from the Taliban.

MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's management of a catastrophic disclosure of confidential data concerning nearly 19,000 Afghans who had requested to relocate to the United Kingdom to avoid the Taliban.

Data Disclosure Happened

A spreadsheet containing confidential details, including identities, addresses and in some cases household data, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The breach became known only in August 2023, when details of nine people who had applied to settle in the UK surfaced on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that the Taliban lack comparable resources that allied forces use,” she told MPs.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have your phone number, they are able to track your precise location. That is what intelligence groups accomplished.”

During testimony about regarding if authorities owned necessary encryption, the source confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Early investigations presented to the committee estimated that approximately fifty relatives and co-workers of individuals impacted by the breach had been executed.

A gag order about the breach was implemented in late 2023 and blocked relevant facts regarding the matter from public disclosure until recently.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the aid group she was working with told affected households they were assisting that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“Our suggestion was that they relocate where feasible and altered their phone numbers. That constituted the two main details that, if authorities acquired these details, would result in their location being found,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

Person A contested that government assessment performed by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to conclude that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not standing up to the Taliban; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

The source explained terrible treatment endured by affected individuals, including electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“Instances include young kids who have had their arms broken to force households to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
